The son of Odin

Hmmm... At first glance, I'm a little underwhelmed.

Now, maybe it's me, but I definitely did not get the same feeling from this picture as I did the first time I saw the "sneak" pic of Iron Man's Mark 1 armor. That first shot of the beat up scrap metal armor made me sit up and take notice. I said to myself: "Wow, self, what are they doing here?" But this one? This one looks maybe a little too plastic-Batman-outfitty to me... which is/isn't surprising, I guess, but still... from the art in the comics, I always thought that sleeve was supposed to be more like chainmail. What, were the WETA guys too busy?

Hmmm... But then, maybe it's the lighting. Maybe we just need to see it in motion. Maybe, maybe, maybe. I mean, yeah, my initial reaction is: underwhelmed. But like I said, this is just a glimpse and honestly, I'm not sure what I was really expecting in the first placee, so maybe that's the rub...

What should we expect?

Thor is the one property out of all of the upcoming Marvel properties that I was the most unsure about. I like the guy they picked, he was really good in a very small role in Abrams's Star Trek. In fact, the whole cast is pretty all around impressive (Anthony Hopkins is Odin), and Kenneth Branagh is directing... I mean, it's got talent, potential, but can it be pulled off? Is Kirby's version of Asgard unfilmable? And I wonder: Will they have the balls to actually call him a God? Hmm... hmm... hmm...hmm... questions and riddles, my friends, questions and riddles and only time will tell.

Bottom line: I need to see more.

Hopefully there's a trailer attached to Iron Man 2.

BTW, I found this at Aint it Cool, they got it from somewhere else.

Jesus H. Christ on a cracker!

WTF, people? WTF!

From Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood:

"But why in the world would anybody want to see Avatar in only 2D? Or want to own the laserdisc of its tech generation? In a stripped-down, zero-extras version? Still, 20th Century Fox tells me that Avatar has "blown away" the first day Blu-ray record held by Warner Bros' The Dark Knight which sold 600K units in North America and the UK. Whereas Fox sold 1.5 million units in the U.S. and Canada. (And yet the yutzes in 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment didn't bother to send out a press release.) A so-called special edition comes out later in 2010, and the 3D edition in 2011."

I am flabbergasted.

Happy Earth Day!

On the news today they were like: "The biggest movie of all time--Avatar--will be released today, appropriately enough on Earth Day." And I thought: What? Appropriately? I mean, I realize a lot of people out there like to cite Avatar's supposedly "pro-environmental" stance as a way to validate the otherwise hollow spectacle that is this film, but come on... First of all, Avatar and everything that goes with it is about as "environmental" as a faded re-cycle bumper sticker slowly peeling away from the fender of an SUV. And secondly, it's EARTH Day, not PANDORA Day... duh...

Now, admittedly, I am not a fan of the trite and predictable fancy-fancy-flash-flash-yippee-Kaboom-explode extravaganza that James Cameron likes to pretend is a fully rounded and realized film and not a boring, cliche ridden snooze-fest saved from being a completely worthless cinematic experience only by it's amazing 3-D presentation--although that only carried its tired, sagging, and overly familiar albatross of a storyline so far--but regardless, I am without a doubt, WAY in the minority when it comes to that opinion.

After 18 weeks:
Avatar
$745,219,191 Domestic Box Office
$1,967,000,000 Foreign Box Office
Which makes it: $2,712,219,191 Worldwide

Nearly 3 billion dollars! 3 BILLION! I may have thought that it sucked, but apparently the world disagreed with me... big time... apparently this film was EXACTLY what every single last one of those fuckers wanted to see.

Which, to me, is just... wow... sing it for me, Hall & Oates

But be warned, all you fine folks out there with your poor taste, as you go trodding out into the world on this, a fine and beautiful Earth Day, while whistling a jaunty tune on your way to the nearest Target to buy the greatest movie ever made (Avatar). The DVD on sale today is a pitiable creature, a bare bones single disc without commentary or special features. The WOO-HOO 4 Disc edition will be out later this month... Of course, you may not want to buy THAT ONE either, as the movie is being re-released to theatres in August with an additional 6 minutes that is guaranteed to siphon another $10 to $15 dollars from your wallet, after which I am nearly positive there will be a "definitive" set released just in time for Christmas and sometime after that, most likely, a Director's Cut.

That is... unless George Lucas sues him for honing in on his act...

Yours truly,
The odd man out,
Jon

Start spreading the news… I’m leaving tomorrow!

P. A. R. T.... Y? Because I gotta!

Yes, it's true. To celebrate the soon-to-be no more-ness of my bachelorhood (sorry ladies), I’m taking myself on an extended week-end of fucking off. You heard right, I’m winging to the coast, kids! Where to? That’s right! You guessed it!

New York City!

This weekend will be both geeky and debauched, a time of fun, food, video games, and more than a little karaoke. The booze will flow like a mighty river!

And while I will miss Little Ms. Super-cute Fiancee (this will be the longest time we've been apart in years), believe me when I say that I am really looking forward to this, because it is very rare time indeed that I get to hang out with the Michelopedia, Senor Fancy-pants, J-town Jason, Sukiyaki Deathsquad girl Z, Keith Rocka Knittel, and maybe even the Daily Scott Brown. It is truly a storied gathering of legend, one worthy of song... like I said: There will be karaoke.

Turn on your heart light! Let it shine wherever you go!

Anyway, I want you all try to take care of each other in my absence. I promise, I’ll be back at it again sometime next week, head down and grinding it out, just like every other poor slob out there… But between the advent of that sad and gloomy day and now, the precipice of my glorious moment of freedom? Until then, ooooh-oh-oh… I am ready. You hear me? I am ready! I’m gonna blow the roof off this mother, as the kids say. I’m gonna be a part of it, in ol' New York!!!

Later, gators!

Shot down

Another query rejected.

That's seven out of thirteen now, apparently the number thirteen isn't that lucky after all... go figure.

All things considered, thirteen is not that many queries total, not really, at least, not as far as these things are concerned, but still... rejections are sucky. I did get a little note back, nothing too special or insightful, just a paragraph, but at least it wasn't a form letter, so... yay.

One thing I did glean from this last response... I have some stalled queries out there, and since I only have a few more days worth of edits left on Gunslingers of the Apocalypse (and then it will be done forever-ish!), that means that my next main focus will be to re-query those folks -- maybe not the two guys that I accidentally queried simultaneously, despite the fact that they work at the same agency and that I have a spreadsheet intended to prevent that very thing from happening, but the rest? Oh yeah, I'll be re-querying like a motherfucker.

You heard me.

The Gift - by Carl Erik Rinsch

I found this fantastic short film on Io9. Go there to check it out.

I'd just post it on here, but Youtube has got these weird size issues whenever I try to embed something, so fuck it. Follow the link.

Trust me though, it's great stuff. Really worth the click.
